Royals’ Perez to be honored by St. Louis Sports Commission for ‘extraordinary sportsmanship’

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KCTV) – Kansas City Royals star catcher Salvador Perez will be honored later this fall for his extraordinary sportsmanship displayed this summer.

The St. Louis Sports Commission will honor Perez at the 2024 Musial Awards with the Musial Award for Extraordinary Sportsmanship, following his backyard wiffleball appearance earlier this summer in Kansas City, Kansas.

Perez helped put smiles on kids faces after stopping in the Piper area for a game of wiffle ball in late August. Last week, Perez invited those kids back to Kauffman Stadium to watch batting practice and one of Kansas City’s final home games of the 2024 season.

“A class act on and off the field, Salvador Perez embodies what the Musial Awards are all about,” said Marc Schreiber, president of the St. Louis Sports Commission, responsible for producing the Musial Awards. “We got such a kick out of seeing the video of him crashing that backyard Wiffle ball game – and that simple, genuine act of lighthearted fun exemplifies the generosity, joyfulness, and sportsmanship that is synonymous with Salvy. We are truly delighted to have the opportunity to honor him at this year’s Musial Awards.”

The 2024 Musial Awards are scheduled for Nov. 23 at Stifel Theatre in St. Louis, Missouri. Perez will hopefully have a third playoff appearance to participate in prior to that.

The 34-year-old catcher is also a nominee for MLB’s 2024 Roberto Clemente Award.
