MLB NRFI and YRFI Picks – September 28

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Yankees

First Pitch – 1:05 pm EST
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, New York
Broadcast – MLB TV

It’s not often you’re going to get a matchup like this at this stage of the season. The two presumed Rookies of the Year face off and I love the spot for an NRFI.

In the top half of the inning, Luis Gil tries to keep his recent strong stretch going. He’s allowed just six earned runs in his last four starts (21.1 innings). That yields a 2.53 ERA in that stretch and now he’ll get an easier opponent. The Pirates rank 29th in the majors in first inning runs as well as being in the bottom third of the league in runs overall.

The bottom half of the inning sees a much better hitting team with the Yankees. However, we have two things going for the NRFI here. The first is the Paul Skenes of it all. He has a sub-2.00 ERA on the season and has somehow been even better lately. He’s allowed just two runs in his last four starts – which gives us an 0.83 ERA in that span. The second thing we have going is that the Yankees clinched the division already. That should mean that Skenes won’t even have to face the whole complement of stars.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 28: No (-135)

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox

First Pitch – 4:10 pm EST
Fenway Park – Boston, Massachusetts
Broadcast – MLB TV

The Rays have been one of the worst hitting teams in the league over the past week. They’ve scored just seven runs in their last four games (1.75 runs per game). Kutter Crawford will get the chance to keep that going. He’s been solid as of late with quality starts in four of his last five games. While his season stats don’t look all that appealing, his recent stretch and the Ray’s struggle makes me feel good about this NRFI.

Shane Baz toes the rubber in the bottom half of the inning. He’s allowed just eight runs over the course of his last five starts (29.1 innings). That comes out to a 2.45 ERA in that span. While the Red Sox are definitely hitting better than the Rays, it hasn’t been all that much better. They’ve scored just twelve runs in their last four games (3.0 runs per game). They’re coming off of back-to-back games of scoring just one run, so it’s hard to imagine they’ll get one off of Baz early here.

NRFI/YRFI Bet for September 28: No (-140)
