Meet Randall Sweet, the new high school sports reporter for the Amarillo Globe-News

Hello Amarillo!

My name is Randall Sweet, and I am the Amarillo Globe-News’ newest sports reporter.

I’m excited to begin this journey covering high school sports in the Texas Panhandle and have already had a wonderful introduction to my new home. In my first week on the job, I’ve been fortunate enough to cover a volleyball match between Canyon and Randall, Canyon ISD and Amarillo ISD’s weekly coaches luncheon and an exciting football game between Sunray and Canadian.

I look forward to being able to cover more events in the Amarillo area and being more present in all of the panhandle communities as I learn more about the area.

I was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, but grew up in Lubbock, where I attended Lubbock High School. During my four years as a Westerner, I played football in addition to running track and cross country, competing against many of the same programs and coaches I now cover.

Following my graduation from LHS in 2018, I enrolled at the University of Oklahoma. After spending more than a year working in the OU Athletic Department, I was part of OU’s regularly televised newscast, OU Nightly, and the school’s weekly sportscast, Sooner Sports Pad, before settling in at the OU Daily, Oklahoma’s independent, student-run newspaper.

As a sports reporter for the OU Daily, I covered Sooners golf, wrestling and softball, chronicling Oklahoma softball’s 2022 national championship team. I also covered local high school sports as a freelance writer for The Norman Transcript, getting my first taste of professional reporting.

After graduating from OU’s Gaylord College in May 2022, I worked for Visit Oklahoma City as a Communications Coordinator, promoting OKC through my written work. After contributing to OKC Thunder on SI throughout my time at Visit OKC, I joined the team at Sooners on SI as a full-time beat reporter and videographer, once again covering OU sports.

In my role with Sooners on SI, I traveled to Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, Orlando and many other destinations to offer complete coverage of Oklahoma athletics. I intend to bring this same effort, passion and work ethic in my coverage of Amarillo-area high school sports.

There are so many incredible stories to tell in the Texas panhandle, and I’m ecstatic to continue learning more about the great people in this area.

If you have any stories to tell, feel free to email sports@amarillo.com, or reach out to me on X (@RandallSweet5). I look forward to getting to know everyone, so if you see me out at a game or event, or even the grocery store, stop and say hello!
