What’s At Stake on Monday?

When the Braves and Mets face off in a doubleheader on Monday, playoff berths will be available for both teams. Because the Diamondbacks and Mets won on Sunday and the Braves lost, the Diamondbacks can only reach the postseason if either the Mets or Braves sweep the doubleheader. The Diamondbacks would be the No. 6 seed in that scenario.

Arizona Diamondbacks @Dbacks

So here’s the sitch:
If either the Braves or the Mets sweep their doubleheader tomorrow, the #Dbacks will make the postseason as the National League’s #6 seed and face the Brewers in Milwaukee in the Wild Card Series.
🤞

If the two teams split, the Braves and Mets will each get in, with the Braves being the No. 5 seed and the Mets No. 6.

That isn’t great news for the D-Backs. The winning team in the first game of the doubleheader isn’t going to have a ton of motivation to win the second game, having already clinched a playoff berth. The better option might be to rest starters in that case, given that they’ll be playing their first Wild Card game on Tuesday.

Granted, if the Mets win the first game of the doubleheader, they might prefer earning the 5-seed and facing the Brewers rather than the Padres. But would that really be worth putting their starters through a grueling doubleheader ahead of the playoffs?

As for how we got here, the Braves looked to be in major trouble on Sept. 17, when a 6-5 loss to the Cincinnati Reds dropped them to 81-70 on the year and two games back of the Mets for the final Wild Card berth. But down the stretch, Atlanta reeled off seven wins in its last nine games, while the Mets lost three in a row before Sunday and the Diamondbacks have lost five of their last seven.

So it’s all up for grabs on Monday. Buckle up, baseball fans—it’s going to be a wild conclusion to the MLB regular season.
