Dozer Day event in Sarpy County helps get kids interested in construction jobs

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – This weekend, the National Utility Contractors Association hosted its annual Dozer Day in Sarpy County.

It’s an event aimed at teaching and inspiring kids of all ages about construction jobs.

“It’s important because we need to make sure we’re building and maintaining our underground infrastructure in Nebraska,” Janet Seelhoff, NUCA executive director said. “This includes water, sewer, storm water systems, electrical; there’s great opportunities for these young students at any age to work for an underground utility contractor and do on the job training and work their way up.”

There were many activities that you could learn from both visually and hands on.

Jeremiah Preston an attendee enjoyed it all.

“I actually have a miniature construction vehicle at home that runs as the same mechanics as the real ones,” Preston said.

Since kicking Dozer Day Saturday, Seelhoff told 6 News they’ve seen at least 1,600 people show up and they expected more on Sunday.

“Last year was our first Dozer Day with a total of 1,800 people so we’re already surpassing our attendance goal and we’re really excited,” Seelhoff said.

And, Seelhoff said if you’re planning to come to the event next year in the fall to bring your curiosity just like Preston.

“I want to explore every single machine,” Preston said. “When I was up on one of them I had this urge to just go inside the machine and check out all the hydraulics.”
