Ariana Grande hit with backlash after breaking silence on Ethan Slater

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Ariana Grande is facing some backlash from fans after addressing the drama surrounding her relationship with Ethan Slater in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.

The 31-year-old singer began dating Slater, 32, last year while filming the upcoming adaptation of Wicked, set to premiere this fall. Their relationship coincided with the end of their marriages, leading to speculation and criticism, particularly rumors suggesting Grande cheated on her ex-husband, Dalton Gomez.

In her interview, which was published on Monday, September 30, Grande expressed disappointment over the negative narrative surrounding her romance, revealing that she “went through a lot of life changes during the filming of [the] movie.” Grande clarified that she understood “why it was a field day for the tabloids to sort of create something that paid their bills,” before explaining how “the most disappointing part was to see so many people believe the worst version of it.”

People rushed to social media after the article went live, quick to comment on the “We Can’t Be Friends” singer’s whirlwind romance. “So what’s the right version tho sis….shes always dancing around it lowkey….” asked one user on X (formerly known as Twitter). Another declared, “These celebs dump their husbands and wives after having affairs and scandals and then want to blame everyone but themselves. Girl stop.”

The songstress also defended Slater in her interview, stating, “There couldn’t be a less accurate depiction of a human being than the one that the tabloids spread about him, and that “No one on this earth tries harder or spreads themselves thinner to be there for the people that he loves and cares about.”

Some fans of Grande came to her defense, however, with one fan stating, “can everyone shut up about the “homewrecking” now. she clearly didn’t do anything wrong so let’s move on🚀.”

That accusation, of course, has to do with the timing of Grande and Slater’s relationship, which emerged in July 2023, coinciding with her split from Gomez after two years of marriage. Slater also divorced his wife, Lilly Jay, around the same time. Jay later criticized Grande, claiming that her family became “collateral damage” in the situation and labeling the singer as “not a girl’s girl.”
