Dutch Online Gambling Industry Implements Strict Deposit Limits
From Today, October 1, 2024, Dutch online gamblers face stricter deposit regulations under the Responsible Gaming Policy and Gambling Limits Regulation. These measures are designed to promote safer gambling habits.
Key Changes:
- Net Deposit Limit (€700 / €300 for young adults): Gamblers who exceed a net deposit of €700 in a calendar month (or €300 for young adults) will be temporarily blocked from depositing until the next month. To exceed this limit, players must provide proof of sufficient income.
- Mandatory Contact for New Customers: New customers setting a monthly deposit limit above €350 (€150 for young adults) will receive a mandatory call or chat from the casino to ensure they understand the risks of gambling.
- Existing Customers: Those with limits above the set thresholds will see a pop-up explaining the risks and encouraging them to reconsider their limits.
- Regular Reminders & Pop-Ups: Players will receive notifications every 30 minutes about their gaming behavior and when they reach 50% and 100% of their limits. Online slots now display clear minimum and actual bet amounts.
The Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) the Netherlands Gambling Authority previously published a webpage detailing the policy for operators: “Frequently Asked Questions Responsible Gaming Policy 2024.”
The Dutch government has approved a gambling tax increase, with rates rising from 30.5% to 34.2% of Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) starting on January 1, 2025. A further increase of 7.3% is set for January 1, 2026.
Numous gambling companies have launched tools to help online casinos comply, ensuring player affordability checks and responsible gaming measures are effectively implemented.
