Underdog Fantasy MLB Daily Pick’em Plays – October 1

October is here. The playoffs are here. The best sports time of the year is here. If you aren’t familiar with playoff baseball, buckle up. Every pitch and every at-bat is important and can change the course of baseball history. Let’s get into the selections!

Tarik Skubal Higher Than 35.5 Fantasy Points

Simply put, Tarik Skubal is the best pitcher in baseball right now. The American League Triple Crown winner should unanimously win the Cy Young Award. His reward for this heroic performance down the stretch is facing the vaunted Houston Astros.

Similar to Detriot, Houston looked dead in the water in the first few months of the season, but seemingly everyone figured it would click at some point.

The team lacks starting pitching but has a scary lineup and a ton of playoff experience. In Game 1, I am not anticipating a lot of offense. Skubal faced Houston twice this season, allowing six earned runs. Not great, but he was so dominant in big games down the stretch for the Tigers, I think he goes deep into this ball game.

Former Astros manager AJ Hinch understands the importance of a series lead, and relying on Skubal to get 18-21 outs will help. His 1.52 ERA in September is giving me the confidence to roll with him in this high-leverage spot.

Framber Valdez Higher Than 17.5 Pitching Outs

Like I said before, if the Astros had a weakness, it would be starting pitching. Verlander is not on the Wildcard roster, so the team will rely on a lot of young arms as well as the bullpen to advance to the ALDS. This means there’s a lot of pressure on Valdez to go deep into Game 1.

Framber has the playoff experience. Last season, he was terrible, although he was clearly not 100% healthy. In 2022, he was seemingly unhittable, pitching to a 1.44 ERA in four appearances. The Tigers have a few scary right-handed hitters in Spencer Torkelson and Matt Vierling, but all of these Tigers hitters have zero playoff experience. Advantage Framber.

Salvador Perez Higher Than 6.0 Fantasy Points

Somehow, someway, Salvador Perez is still smashing baseballs in 2024. The 34-year-old World Series Champ had his best season since 2021. Although this Royals team is young, they have some players with playoff experience, such as Perez. We don’t have to worry about the spot being too big for a guy who played in two World Series.

Perez also has great numbers against Baltimore’s Game 1 starter Corbin Burnes. He is 6-12 in his career with a home run and a .402 xBA. Burnes hasn’t been himself down the stretch of the season, and I think Perez can take advantage of that in this spot!
