Muddy Rudder Restaurant in Yarmouth closes after nearly 50 years of business

YARMOUTH, Maine (WMTW) – The Muddy Rudder Restaurant off Route 1 in Yarmouth has closed after nearly 50 years of business.

The restaurant known to locals as “The Rudder” first opened in 1976 and became one of the most popular spots in Maine for fresh seafood.

A pop-up on the restaurant’s website reads: “With sadness, we are ceasing operations. Thank you for your loyalty.”

A post on the Muddy Rudder’s Facebook page, which appears to have been written by one of the owners of the restaurant, states the establishment is “closing indefinitely effective immediately.”

“For me, ‘The Rudder’ was not just a place to serve food and drink, it was a place of human connection. Our guests and crew alike shared many memories that I will never forget,” the post reads. “The biggest thank you for the last 13 years. It has truly changed my life. You made a man’s dream come true and for that I will be forever grateful. Although my heart is broken, it is also overflowing with gratitude.”

The Muddy Rudder is located next to the Cousins River and is about a 10-minute drive from the L.L.Bean flagship store and campus in Freeport. The restaurant is also close to Portland, about a 15-minute drive on Interstate 295

Since May 2011, the Muddy Rudder Restaurant has been owned by Jeff Miller and Matt Witham.
