River Hawks Welcome Liam Cound and Anthony Fortuna To Sports Performance Staff – UMass Lowell Athletics

LOWELL, Mass. – Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Performance Marcus Williams has recently announced the addition of Liam Cound and Anthony Fortuna to the sports performance staff.

“The additions of both Liam and Anthony have been tremendous for the Sports Performance staff and our students,” said Williams. “Liam’s knowledge of performance technology and experience operating a strength and conditioning department will allow him to bring a wealth of knowledge to our staff. Anthony’s continued commitment to River Hawk Nation has allowed him to excel in his current role, and I am excited to have him as a member of our team.”

Cound, who will serve as a head sports performance coach, comes to Lowell following a year as a head strength and conditioning coach at Lake Superior State University. While there, Cound oversaw all program design, implementation, and assessment for their NCAA DI Men’s Ice Hockey team as well as all of the school’s DII sports. He also provided training interventions to improve speed, strength, power, body composition, and injury risk mitigation, and worked with athletic training to make individual adjustments based on injury limitations and coordinate return-to-play protocols.

Before Lake Superior State, Cound was a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at Harding University. At Harding, he worked primarily with the baseball, volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, and women’s golf programs. With those teams, he designed, implemented, and evaluated strength programs.

Cound began his career as a strength and conditioning intern with the University of Iowa Olympic Sports. He earned his master’s degree in strength and conditioning from Harding in 2023 and graduated from the University of Iowa with his bachelor’s in 2022.

Serving as a graduate fellow on the River Hawk staff, Fortuna has spent the last year as an intern for the UMass Lowell Sports Performance Department. While here, he has helped maintain facility organization and cleanliness and assisted in the setup and breakdown of training sessions. Alongside that, he has also led the implementation and supervision of all sessions.

Before starting in Lowell, Fortuna also spent time as a strength and conditioning intern at Southern New Hampshire University. At SNHU, he had many similar responsibilities, including the creation and implementation of training programs for athletes and supervising all workout sessions.

Fortuna has also volunteered as a coach at Become Soccer and is currently a coach at F45 North Andover. He graduated with his bachelor’s in exercise science from Merrimack College this year and is currently pursuing his master’s in exercise and sports science.
