Public invited to premiere of ‘Prom Dates’ movie filmed in Syracuse
It’s not a premiere, it’s a “Prom-iere.”
“Prom Dates,” the latest movie filmed in Syracuse, will be released on Friday, May 3, and local residents are invited to the New York premiere.
The movie will begin streaming on Hulu on May 3, but it will also be screened that night at Syracuse Studios, the Liverpool headquarters for the American High film company.
It’s a fundraiser for The Academy at American High, a non-profit aimed at educating the next generation of young filmmakers. A $5 donation is suggested. Ticket RSVPs are required and are first come, first served.
Moviegoers are encouraged to wear prom attire, and the night will include a traditional prom with dancing and photo ops. The evening begins with a red carpet walk at 6:30 p.m., followed by the “Prom Dates” screening at 7 p.m. and prom festivities from 8:30-10 p.m.
“Prom Dates,” produced by comedian Kevin Hart, is described as a coming-of-age comedy about two best friends, Jess (Antonia Gentry, “Ginny & Georgia,”) and Hannah (Julia Lester, “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series”), who scramble to find new dates after their original plans fall apart. The film was directed by Kim Nguyen (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”), written by D.J. Mausner (”Baroness Von Sketch Show”), and also stars John Michael Higgins (”Best in Show”) and comedian Chelsea Handler.
It’s the 16th movie shot in the Syracuse area by American High. More than 1,000 extras were recruited for scenes filmed last May and June.
