The World’s Best Rye Whiskey According To The IWSC 2024 Whiskey Judging

The International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) has awarded the 2024 Rye Whisky Trophy to Frank August Case Study: 03, Winter Cover Rye, 3 Barrel Batch. The award, signifying the “World’s Best Rye Whiskey,” highlights a little-known but incredibly innovative whiskey brand that has rapidly gained a reputation for pushing the boundaries of traditional whiskey making. The IWSC, the oldest spirits competition in the world, holds one of the largest yearly spirits judging and is arguably the most prestigious whiskey competition worldwide.

Frank August is a modern American whiskey brand that stands out for its unique, limited-edition releases, often referred to as “Case Studies.” These Case Studies are meticulously crafted, small-batch expressions that showcase various aspects of whiskey craftsmanship, from innovative mash bills to experimental barrel aging techniques. Frank August’s minimalist branding and focus on innovation, while still honoring the heritage and craft of traditional whiskey-making, is what sets it apart in the industry.

The Case Study: 03 expression, titled Winter Cover Rye, is a testament to Frank August’s ongoing exploration of rye whiskey production. This release, a 3-barrel batch, showcases the influence of the winter climate and the unique rye grain profile.

The “Winter Cover” name refers to the agricultural practice of planting rye as a cover crop in winter, which protects and enriches nutrients in the soil. Rye used as a winter cover crop typically has a higher protein to starch ratio in the kernel, creating a different aroma and taste profile from more modern and widely used rye varieties.

August produces its whiskey in small quantities, underscoring its unwavering commitment to quality and unrelenting experimentation. This expression’s use of a historic rye variety brings a spicier, more robust flavor profile to the whiskey than many traditional rye whiskies, making it a must-try for rye connoisseurs.

The rye whiskey’s nose is an intricate symphony of rye spice, rich dark chocolate, and toasted oak. Subtle hints of clove, nutmeg, and the distinctive herbal quality often found in rye whiskeys add depth. As the whiskey opens, a touch of orange zest and dried fruits emerges, promising a complex and intriguing flavor profile.

The rye character shines through on the palate with a bold, peppery spice balanced by underlying sweetness. Caramel and toffee provide a smooth, rich mouthfeel, while the rye adds complexity with layers of black pepper, cinnamon, and allspice. The influence of the oak barrels is apparent, contributing to a slightly smoky flavor and hints of charred wood. The whiskey has a noticeable mouth weight and a pronounced oily viscosity.

The finish is long, slightly sweet, and warming, with lingering spice. A pleasant dryness eventually emerges from the oak. The rye’s natural spiciness remains dominant, but there is also a subtle, lingering sweetness from the caramel and vanilla notes. A touch of baking spices rounds out the experience, making it both satisfying and complex.

The IWSC Judging Panel described the rye whiskey as featuring:

Attractive nose of sweet rye spice and red berry compote with a hint of brioche toasty notes, giving an elegant and attractive palate of dark fruits and balanced oak, a rich and rounded mouthfeel with firm tannins, and a pleasing texture that persists in the mouth. Nicely done.

Frank August Case Study: 03 Winter Cover Rye is a rich, robust rye whiskey that balances bold spiciness with smooth sweetness. It is an excellent choice for rye enthusiasts or those exploring a high-quality, small-batch American whiskey. Its limited-edition nature also makes it a collectible item for whiskey connoisseurs.
