The World’s Best Gin According To The 2024 IWSC Judging

The International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) has awarded the 2024 Classic Gin Trophy to Naught Distilling, Overproof Gin. The 2024 Flavored Gin Trophy was awarded to Anchor Distilling Company, Junipero Smoked Rosemary Gin. Both spirits were judged the world’s best in their respective gin category. The IWSC, the oldest spirits competition in the world, holds one of the largest yearly spirits judging and is arguably the most prestigious spirits competition worldwide.

Naught Distilling, Overproof Gin, 57.4% ABV, 700 ml

Naught Distilling is an Australian boutique distillery based in Melbourne, known for producing high-quality artisanal spirits. The distillery has quickly gained recognition for its commitment to craftsmanship and attention to detail, using locally sourced botanicals and cutting-edge distillation techniques. Their range includes several gins, including a signature Overproof Gin that has become a standout due to its bold and intense flavors.

Naught’s Overproof Gin is a high-strength gin designed for those who appreciate a robust, concentrated gin experience. It is crafted using a carefully selected blend of botanicals, including juniper, citrus peels, assorted herbs, and spices. Distilled in small batches, this gin reflects the distillery’s focus on quality and bold flavors, perfect for cocktails or enjoying over ice.

On the nose, the gin is particularly intense, with a powerful burst of juniper dominating. Strong citrus notes, particularly lemon and orange peel, add a zesty freshness. Hints of spice, such as coriander and black pepper, round out the aromatic profile.

On the palate, the gin’s higher alcohol content gives it a pronounced mouth weight and a smooth, oily character. The juniper notes carry through strongly to the palate, accompanied by citrus zest and herbal undertones. There are layers of complexity, with peppery spice, earthy botanicals, and a slight floral sweetness balancing the alcohol’s assertiveness.

The finish is long and warming, with a clean, slightly dry aftertaste. The spices linger, along with a pleasant warmth from the higher proof, which fades into a smooth, satisfying juniper note.

Naught Distilling’s Overproof Gin is ideal for gin lovers who enjoy a spirit with bold flavors and versatility in cocktails. Its higher strength makes it well-suited for classic gin-based cocktails like a Negroni or Gin and Tonic, where it can stand up to strong mixers without losing character.

Junipero Smoked Rosemary Gin, 49.3% ABV, 750 ml

Junipero Smoked Rosemary Gin is a unique expression of the Junipero Gin line, known for its bold and botanical-heavy gins produced by Anchor Distilling Company in San Francisco. Founded in 1996, Junipero Gin was one of the pioneers of the American craft gin movement, renowned for its high proof and strong juniper-forward profile. The brand emphasizes a traditional London Dry style with a complex botanical blend.

The Smoked Rosemary Gin version is a creative twist on the classic Junipero, incorporating rosemary smoked during the distillation process. This addition brings an herbal, slightly woody depth to the gin, complementing the bold juniper and other botanicals traditionally found in Junipero’s recipe. This gin is typically released as a limited edition, catering to gin enthusiasts who enjoy herbal and smoky flavors with their spirits.

On the nose, the gin opens with a powerful juniper note, a signature of the Junipero line. This is followed by a distinct smoky rosemary scent that brings a savory, herbal character. Hints of pine and citrus peel, likely from the lemon and orange botanicals in the base gin, add a refreshing layer.

On the palate, the gin is bold and herbal, with the smoky rosemary notes taking center stage, balanced by the sharpness of the juniper and subtle peppery spices. The citrus elements add brightness, while other earthy botanicals like coriander and angelica root provide complexity. The well-integrated smoked element offers a warm, savory note without overpowering the more traditional gin flavors.

The finish is long and lingering, with the rosemary smoke providing a subtle, aromatic aftertaste. The juniper remains prominent, but the smoke fades into a mild sweetness, leaving a clean, herbal note on the palate.

This gin can be enjoyed neat or in cocktails. Its smoky and herbal notes make it an interesting twist on classic drinks like Gin and Tonic or a Negroni. The savory rosemary flavor also pairs well with citrus-forward mixers or simple garnishes like lemon or rosemary sprigs.
