Charges filed against man shot during burglary of Kansas City business

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Charges have been filed against a man who allegedly attempted to burglarize a Kansas City business before he was shot by the owner.

Records filed with the Jackson County, Missouri, Circuit Court on Monday, Sept. 30, have revealed that Kevin A. Ellison, 38, of Kansas City, was charged with burglary after a business owner shot him during an attempted robbery.

The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department says that around 2 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, law enforcement officials were called to a business at 10000 E. Bannister Rd. with reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found the business owner standing a short distance away from Ellison, who was lying on the ground.

The business owner told investigators he had received an alarm notification through his phone. As he approached the business, he saw broken glass and two men, one of which was later identified as Ellison, dressed in all black with face masks.

Law enforcement officials said the victim told both suspects to leave before they became belligerent. As they threatened the victim’s life, he fired his weapon at both. Ellison sustained a single gunshot wound to the back and was taken to Research Medical Center for treatment.

Investigators noted that Ellison had previously been convicted of burglary, voluntary manslaughter and possession of a controlled substance. Ellison has been listed in nearly 40 KCPD reports for elusion, stolen vehicles, firearms felonies, possession of stolen property, domestic violence, burglary, theft from vehicles, and aggravated assault.

As of Saturday, Oct. 6, Ellison remains behind bars with a $50,000 bond. No court appearances have been set yet.
