Meeting to focus on aquatics feature funding for sports complex

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – The City of Jonesboro is set to discuss funding for the outdoor aquatics feature for the new sports complex.

The Finance and Administration Council Committee will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 8, to discuss a resolution by the city council that would allocate $3,200,000 from American Rescue Plan Act funds and partner with the Advertising and Promotion Commission to build an aquatic center.

“The requested additional funding will greatly increase water features including slides, play and splash equipment in the outdoor water area and will complement the indoor competition and recreational pool facility,” the resolution states. “The proposed outdoor and indoor aquatics offerings will be mutually beneficial to Jonesboro residents and the success of the Sports Complex’s efforts to recruit athletic events.”

Talks of the sports complex have been going on since 2022.

In October of that year, a feasibility study touched on a conceptual design for the facility, with an indoor aquatics area to be included, complete with a pool, diving boards, and a warm-up pool with a splash pad. A 22,000-square-foot outdoor aquatics area was also mentioned.

Prospective pricing for the complex as discussed in April 2024 would be $77,325,375.
