South Dakota woman avoids Hurricane Milton after Florida travel cancellations

ORLANDO, F.L. (Dakota News Now) – A South Dakota woman who accompanied her friend to Miami for cancer treatments is making her way back before Hurricane Milton strikes.

Before boarding her flight back to Sioux Falls Tuesday morning, Kristen Koob spoke to ABC News about her time in Florida.

She had flown into Orlando to give support.

“Never been to Florida before. I came down here to accompany a friend who is having cancer treatments in Miami. Her children live in Orlando. So, we took the Brightline down to Miami and had her treatment,” said Koob.

The trip was meant to be a time of relaxation.

“We were going to spend four or five days in the sun having some fun. I love pools, and in South Dakota, we don’t have a lot of pools,” said Koob.

But Koob’s plans were cut short when Hurricane Milton set its sights on Florida.

“Our flight on Thursday to go home was canceled,” said Koob.

Fortunately, she made it home before Hurricane Milton sweeps across Florida and makes landfall less than two weeks after Helene passed through.

Getting out, however, came with a price.

“I was fortunate to book a flight this morning. Well, it cost me a lot more money. I had to switch airlines and buy a very expensive ticket because I just bought it a day in advance,” said Koob.

Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall on the west coast of Florida sometime Wednesday night and into Thursday.
