Google Pixel Users-How To Send Emergency Messages During Hurricane Milton

With Hurricane Milton on the horizon, preparedness is essential, especially for maintaining communication when cellular networks may go down.

If you own a Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, or Pixel 9 Pro Fold, you can use Satellite SOS, a feature that lets you contact emergency services even when Wi-Fi and cellular networks are unavailable.

What Is Satellite SOS on Google Pixel?

Satellite SOS is an emergency communication feature available on select Pixel devices. By leveraging satellite networks, the feature enables users to send messages to emergency responders when traditional networks are down.

It’s particularly useful during emergencies, such as hurricanes, when cell towers may be compromised. Users can contact 911 through Satellite SOS, send essential information, and notify emergency contacts.

Setting Up Satellite SOS

For Satellite SOS to work, ensure your phone’s software and APIs (tools that let different apps and devices talk to each other) are up to date. You’ll receive a notification once the feature is activated. To confirm service availability:

  1. Open Settings on your Pixel phone.
  2. Tap Safety & Emergency and locate Satellite SOS to verify its status.

How to Use Satellite SOS in an Emergency

In the event of an emergency where you lack network coverage, follow these steps to connect to Satellite SOS and contact emergency services:

Dial 911

When you have no Wi-Fi or cellular network, you’ll see an option for Satellite SOS. Tap Use Satellite SOS and then Start.

Complete the Emergency Questionnaire

Describe your situation by filling out the on-screen questionnaire. You can also decide whether to notify your emergency contacts and share your location details. To do so, select Notify; if you choose not to share this information, tap Don’t notify.

Position Your Phone for Satellite Connection

Follow the on-screen prompts to align your phone correctly with the satellite. Clear skies provide the best connection, so ensure you have a clear view of the sky by avoiding any obstructive structures. Once connected, emergency responders will receive your messages.

Receive and Respond

Once connected, you’ll receive a response from emergency services, typically within minutes. Stay outside in the open for the best connection, as positioning can impact response time.

End the Session

When you’re ready to disconnect, tap End and follow any prompts that appear on your screen.

Important: Check Default Messaging App

You will need Google Messages set as your default messaging app to use Satellite SOS. If you change your default messaging app, the Satellite SOS feature will no longer be available.

Practicing with Satellite SOS

Before an emergency arises, familiarize yourself with the Satellite SOS demo mode:

  1. Go to Settings > Safety & Emergency > Satellite SOS.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to practice connecting to a satellite. Your mobile network will briefly disable and re-enable when you exit the demo, allowing you to simulate the satellite texting experience in a controlled setting.

Additional Tips for Emergency Preparedness

Keep Your Phone Charged

Satellite SOS can drain your battery faster than usual. Keep a portable charger on hand, especially during hurricane season.

Add Emergency Contacts

Pre-select key contacts under Settings > Safety & Emergency > Emergency Contacts to ensure quick notifications in an emergency.

With Hurricane Milton approaching, activating Satellite SOS on your Pixel device is a proactive step to stay connected and safe when traditional communication methods may fail. By following these instructions and preparing in advance, you’ll be ready to communicate with emergency services, no matter what the storm brings.
