Several Florida evacuees travel to Hoover for refuge

HOOVER, Ala. (WBRC) – A number of people from Florida have decided to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Milton with some looking to find shelter in Alabama.

WBRC spoke with Diane Booth who traveled from Lakeland, Florida, which is between Tampa and Orlando.

She said these last few days have been overwhelming, but she chose to evacuate Monday because she didn’t want to take any chances.

Booth said traffic coming out of Florida was hectic and many gas stations on her way out had ran out of fuel.

She said it took her 7 hours to get to Georgia where she was hoping to find refuge, but many places and rest stops were maxed out.

However, she’s grateful to have found a place of refuge at the Hoover RV Park, but is worried about what she’ll find when she gets back home.

“I think everybody is going to come together we are just hoping that you know the structures are still there and standing for us when we get back home,” said Booth.

Booth and her family plan to leave Friday, but it will all depend on what happens with Milton over the next few days.
