Homefield setting youth athletes up for success with new $60 million KCK sports complex

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A new youth sports complex in KCK just opened this week with a vision of giving youth access to a space where they can train like professionals.

The president of Homefield Kansas City says he hopes kids can come into the space and feel inspired to get active in sports programs. It also serves as a draw for travel teams nationwide.

“I think there’s a lot of options that can be played here and I think that’s really cool for the youth and everybody upcoming,” said KCKCC basketball player Jailyn Schmaltz.

The $60 million indoor sports facility is being used to house girls’ and boys’ basketball and volleyball. An additional $40 million is being invested into 8 synthetic-turf baseball fields. It is funded by Sales Tax and Revenue (STAR) bonds and will serve children as young as four-years-old up to college-aged athletes like Schmaltz.

“We really like it, we were here when this place, they were still under construction actually. It’s very nice, very clean, very very welcoming. It’s really helped us since our gym shut down this year,” she said.

The 150,000 square foot space encompasses 10 basketball courts, 12 volleyball courts, and a full restaurant and bar. The sports group wants to incentivize travel teams to come to Kansas City and bring in more local dollars.

“Every professional athlete, that’s a small pool however every single one of those men and women played as a young athlete,” said Homefield KC president Dustin Lewis.

Between the Kansas Speedway, Sporting KC, the Kansas City Monarchs, and the Mattel Adventure Park opening in 2026–the Wyandotte County Economic Development Council says the county is seeing continued growth.

“They come in to play sports but they’re staying at local hotels, they’re going to other attractions, they’re shopping in restaurants, shopping and dining and so that drives an economy that begins to build on itself,” WYEDC president Greg Kindle.

The Homefield KCK Development is part of an $800 million Margaritaville Resort Development also being funded through STAR bonds and private funding. The resort is scheduled to open next summer.
