Comedian reveals major career update to talk show host

It’s a huge life change for George Lopez.

The comedian, who starred in his own television series “George Lopez,” confirmed his retirement from stand-up comedy when asked by talk show host Tamron Hall during his appearance there.

His upcoming special for Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service will be “the last one, he told Hall in a clip obtained by Deadline and published on Thursday. In the clip, Lopez joked that he has “subjected the American people to enough of my crap.”

Now, it “seems like the right time” to make the change, he added.

“It’s been the one thing that has just never left me my whole life,” Lopez, 63, said of stand-up comedy. “It’s a wonderful place to leave it at this particular point.”

The comedian was joined by his daughter Mayan, 28, during the announcement. The father and daughter costar on the NBC comedy Lopez vs. Lopez.

“I want to spend more time with her,” Lopez said, rubbing Mayan’s shoulder and adding, “I love the show.”

The much-anticipated interview isn’t expected to be released in full until later this month.

The upcoming stand-up comedy special, which has yet to acquire a release date, was shot at a Los Angeles’ Dolby Theater on Sept. 27 and 28 as part of Lopez’s “ALLLRIIIIGHHTTT! Comedy” tour.

Lopez’s last taped special was “We’ll Do It for Half,” which was released on Netflix in 2020. He also starred in the specials “America’s Mexican,” “Tall, Dark, and Chicano,”“It’s Not Me, It’s You,” and “The Wall” for HBO.
