World-class educational experts help UP teachers during conference

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Upper Peninsula educators learned from world-class education experts at Northern Michigan University’s Northern Center Monday.

Marquette-Alger RESA (MARESA) began its 2024 Fall Education Conference. MARESA Superintendent Gregory Nyen says the six experts will enhance participants’ skills.

“As humans who often need healthcare, when we’re choosing a doctor, we choose the best doctor that we can find,” Nyen said. “The same is true in education.”

Australian educator John Hattie spoke about Visible Learning. Nyen says the meta-research uses studies and data to see how things like feedback and efficacy influence education. He says teachers will learn which effects have the greatest gains for students.

“We will have more educators who will employ those very positive impacts to education and really help students realize their full potential,” Nyen said.

Another topic the experts encouraged is the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. MARESA MTSS Director Jon Young says it creates frameworks that guide resources to help all students.

“MTSS allows us to really support the student where they are in their learning,” Young said. “Which, as a result, all students can benefit from. We see great success across across the school district.”

Young says he’s excited to have professional development for local teachers this year.

“All the professional learning that we do is really centered on students and student learning, and our goal is to make an impact on our teachers, on our educators, so that they can make a better impact in their classroom,” Young said.

Nyen hopes to bring the presenters back in the future.
