Is travel insurance worth it for the holidays? Experts weigh in

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Travel insurance is one way you and your family can safeguard your upcoming holiday trips against unexpected hiccups.

Allstate Agent, Brian Green, said travel insurance can help cover the costs of things such as medical emergencies and airfare.

“The airlines are moving a lot of people, a lot of baggage right now. They’re doing their best to provide great service but sometimes the ball gets dropped and that’s why we buy insurance,” said Green. “You can lose luggage, cancellation insurance if something happens and you’re just out the cost of your hotels; all that stuff can really add up in a hurry.”

When does it make sense for you and your family to purchase a plan? Green said if you‘re driving across states or flying through American companies, you’re usually in the clear.

“If you’re traveling through the states you can buy the cancellation insurance through the airlines and that’s probably a less expensive option to handle it that way,” said Green. “I think you’re probably okay in the States. It’s when you’re traveling especially to Mexico or overseas that you really want to look into it.”

While budgeting especially during the holidays can be a concern, Green said it’s important to consider what you could lose.

“Let us know what your plans are and how long you’re going to be gone. It’s surprisingly affordable, especially for the amount you invest to take a trip like that paying a couple hundred dollars to ensure thousands and thousands of dollars in travel expenses is a bargain in most cases,” said Green.

If you and your family would like to look into travel insurance, talk to your local insurance agent, and be sure to read any fine print if you start searching for options online.
