Small business lessons held in Paragould

PARAGOULD, Ark. (KAIT) – As more and more small businesses continue to appear, sometimes it’s a good idea to get some advice before starting one.

The Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center hosted one on one consultations for people interested in starting their own small business.

These sessions are held in ten different counties across the state, and they visit each of these counties every two months, at least.

Tuesday, October 15, was when this was hosted in Paragould in the new GIN building.

“Our center works with entrepreneurs and people that want to start a business,” said Laura Miller, Director of Arkansas State University Small Business and Technology Development Center. “We do it primarily three ways. One-on-one and consulting, which is one thing we are doing today, and we do that day in day out.”

Miller added that they also do training events and have market research they can share with clients.

When someone schedules an appointment, there are all different types of things that are covered in their meetings.

“A lot of the people that come in here have an idea that they want to start a business,” said Miller. “So, they come in, we work by appointment, and we just talk about some of the basics of getting a business started, what options there are for financing, licenses, and permits.”

They also discuss their business plans, whether they should be a sole proprietor, or LLCs.

All different types of people come in for these lessons.

“I have people that wake up in the morning and decide that they want to start a business, and they come in completely unprepared, and I’ve gotten business plans in on a napkin before,” said Miller. “We’ve got people that have spent years thinking about this, and they have everything in place, and they are ready to start working through the process.”One-on-one
