The 2026 World Triathlon Championship Finals to return to Pontevedra – World Triathlon

World Triathlon is proud to announce that the Executive Board has approved to award the 2026 Championship Finals to Pontevedra, Spain. “It is a great honor that, in my last meeting as the President of this organization, we were able to decide to host this event in Spain, in a city like Pontevedra that has given so much to our sport throughout the years”, said Marisol Casado, World Triathlon’s President and IOC Member.

This decision once again positions the Spanish city as the epicentre of triathlon, establishing Pontevedra as the absolute benchmark for the sport, after having hosted the Championship Finals in 2023, and the World Triathlon Multisport Festival in 2019 and again next year, in 2025. “Pontevedra could not be prouder to host the Championship Finals for a second time. I want to express my gratitude to World Triathlon for their trust in our city to host this event. We will strive to make the best Grand Final possible,”  said Miguel Anxo Fernández Lores, mayor of Pontevedra.

José Hidalgo, president of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, emphasized that “Spain is becoming the paradise of triathlon at a global level and enjoys the confidence of the top international organizations. If we already considered it a milestone when Spain was the first country to host two consecutive finals in Pontevedra and Torremolinos, announcing that we will return to our country in two years means the consolidation of Spain as the world reference for major World Triathlon events.”
“Such major international events, like the 2025 Multisport World Championship that will be hosted in Pontevedra next June, are made possible by a city model designed for people, recognized internationally. We must remember Boa Vila’s commitment to sport as a driver not only for health and well-being but also as a boost for the local economy and the entire region,” Fernández Lores celebrated.

The Championship Finals is the pinnacle of the World Triathlon annual calendar, crowning the world champions for elite, U23, Junior, Para Triathlon, and Age Group world championships for sprint and standard distance, as well as the mixed relay world championships for Junior/U23s, Para triathlon and Age-Group.

The Championship Finals in Torremolinos, Spain, will host more than 5,500 athletes from 79 nations, making this one of the biggest World Triathlon Championships in history.
