Muncy accumulates more than 600 yards in rout of Athens

At some point during the practice week, Muncy coach Sean Tetreault had his team work on the punting game. On Friday night, the hometown Indian fans never got to see the punt unit’s hard work. Muncy played a near-perfect offensive game, never seeing a fourth-down play the entire tonight, as they rode huge games from Austin Johnson and Landyn Wommer en route to a 63-26 shellacking of visiting Athens at Schuyler Memorial Stadium Friday night.

“Our kids are playing together. They’re playing they’re playing more sound football so we’re happy to see the big plays pay off, and we have to just stay consistent with our blocking schemes and with our effort,” Tetreault said.

The Muncy offensive line was phenomenal all night, and that added up to big play after big play. The Indian offense had well over 600 total yards of offense, scored on all but the final drive on the game when they ran the clock out, and was a well-oiled machine.

The attack, like every week so far in their 8-1 campaign, was built around Johnson and Wommer. They combined for 559 total yards and all nine Muncy touchdowns. They did that on just 20 combined touches of the football, good for over 27 yards per touch.

“Any time I can get the ball to (Johnson and Wommer) in open space, I’ll take my chances. We preach it all the time. We’ve got to get our athletes in space, give them a one-on-one matchup. We’ve got to win the one-on-one matchup. We practice it every week for a reason. We’re happy to see it’s still paying off,” Tetreault said.

While it’s Johnson — a four-year 1,000-yard rusher in the Indian backfield — that gets all the accolades, Landyn Wommer has proven to be a solid second option. He had a career night on Friday, tallying 293 total yards and four touchdowns. He scored his second 90-plus yard touchdown in as many weeks when he put the Indians up 22-0 with a minute left in the first quarter following an interception in the red zone by freshman linebacker Layken Harris. It was one of three touchdown runs for Wommer that went for over 50 yards in the first half.

“It all starts with our big boys up front. Nothing happens without those guys. And to get out in open space and to see that green grass ahead, you just get a rush of adrenaline it just kicks in and I keep going,” Wommer sad.

Even after Athens scored to open the scoring in the 2nd quarter and cut the lead to 22-7, Muncy played like it hadn’t lost any momentum. Wommer broke off a 55-yard run for a touchdown, and Johnson plowed in from 7 yards out on the next drive to put Muncy up 36-7 just 19 minutes into the game. Johnson’s 7-yard run was his third of the half, as he opened up the scoring with a 64-yard catch and run and broke off a 77-yard run for a score on the second position for Muncy.

Teams tend to focus on Johnson, but the emergence of Wommer has made things that much easier for the senior.

“I think our coaches have been using me and Landon in a lot of different ways, and I think that they’ve done really well, and I think they’re doing a great job offensively. I think that’s why we’ve been doing so good on offense,” Johnson said.

Athens do-it-all star Connor Davidson picked up a kickoff that hit inside the 10 and stopped along the sideline and returned it 91 yards untouched for a score to make it 36-14 on the ensuing kickoff. But, nothing would slow down the Muncy offense.

They calmly drove down the field and scored again on a 24-yard run by Johnson. Then, after Carter Feagles picked off a pass in the end zone with 34 seconds left, Wommer went 80 yards for a score, and Muncy had a 50-point first half.

Johnson and Wommer each added long touchdowns in the second half, with Johnson running in from 52 yards in the third quarter and Wommer catching a pass in the flat from Stiles Eyer and going 46-yards for a touchdown. Only the game clock running out prevented the Indians from scoring on all ten drives, as Stiles Eyer did a fantastic job running the offense and getting his fellow seniors in Wommer and Johnson the ball in space all night.
