Banijay Iberia Sports Launches in Spain with Long-Time TV, Radio Personality Gonzalo Miró Heading the New Outfit (EXCLUSIVE)
Banijay Iberia is upping its investment in Spanish sport by launching Banijay Iberia Sports, led by newly-appointed Director Gonzalo Miró, a well-known TV and radio personality in the region.
Unveiled at Mipcom on Monday, the new group will develop and produce original sports-related content, including “sportainment, documentary and digital,” the company outlined.
Spearheaded by Banijay Ibera CEO Pilar Blasco, the launch of Banijay Iberia Sport follows last year’s introduction of Banijay Sport and this year’s inauguration of LaLiga Studios, a joint initiative with Spain’s top soccer competition. According to Banijay Iberia, establishing the new sports-dedicated unit reinforces the company’s commitment to the world of athletic competition.
Miró began his work in the audiovisual sector as an apprentice on several well-regarded short films. After getting a taste for the trade, he studied filmmaking in New York before returning to Spain and scoring a role as a contributing presenter on “Las mañanas de Cuatro.” In the years since, he’s appeared on a wide range of Spanish radio and TV programs, including Deportes COPE, Radio Marca, “La Roca,” “Liarla Pardo,” “Más vale tarde,” “Espeko Público” and “Celebrity Master Chef.”
Of his appointment, Miró said: “It is an honor to be part of Banijay Iberia, a company responsible for great audiovisual successes and at the forefront of innovation and creativity. I am embarking on this brilliant challenge with great enthusiasm and with the aim of boosting the company’s position as a leader in sports content. In doing so, I’m confident we can attract new talent and pave the way for more sport-centric, original stories to make their way onto screens.”
Banijay Iberia CEO Blasco added: “Banijay Iberia’s move into the sports area began in 2023 with the creation of LaLiga Studios. Today, complementing Banijay Entertainment’s wider global sports drive, we strengthen our commitment to diversifying our offering in this way, capitalizing on market opportunity and demand via the birth of Banijay Iberia Sports, a new division led by Gonzalo Miró. Welcoming him to our ambitious collective of talent, we look forward to continuing to explore alternative avenues for storytelling in this burgeoning space.”
