Kingsford and Marquette boys’ soccer travel to Gaylord for Regional Semifinals

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – A pair of U.P. teams are still alive in the boys’ high school soccer postseason, 16-1-1 Kingsford and 16-3-2 Marquette.

Kingsford will match up with Montague in a regional semifinal game at Gaylord Tuesday. The Flivvers dismissed Grayling 4-1 in their district final game Saturday.

Jaxon and Jett buckley have Kingsford offensively this season and will look to continue their strong seasons in the next round.

Flivvers head coach Jeff Gordon said Montague plays a similar style to Grayling, and his team is concentrated on formation ahead of the game.

“The kids get out there and get out of formation because they’re playing hard,” Gordon said. “Getting them back into formation is the key.”

Marquette‘s regional semifinal game against Fruitport will immediately follow Kingsford’s game in Gaylord.

The Sentinels practiced under the lights on Marquette’s football field Monday night to prepare for the conditions of Tuesday’s game, a 7 p.m. start on a turf field.

They’ve breezed through the first two rounds of the postseason, blowing out Gaylord and later Petoskey to win their district Saturday.

Now they face a matchup with the team that knocked them out in the regional finals last season.

Some players have revenge on the mind, and others are focused on keeping the season alive.

“I have had this marked on my calendar since the beginning of the year. I was really sad about what happened last year when we lost,” Marquette senior Jack Sysko said. “We’re in the same situation as last year.”

“To me, every opponent‘s the same,” Marquette senior Dixon Poggi said. “Instead of revenge, I’m just thinking about how we can continue making a name for Marquette.”
