The Yankees and Dodgers will face off in the World Series. See how history will be made

The Fall Classic has a chance to be just that.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees will square off in the 2024 World Series, a matchup of two of the most high-profile franchises in Major League Baseball that were also the best teams in their respective leagues during the regular season.

This battle pits two squads that are similar to each other. Both the National League’s Dodgers, who are in the World Series for the fourth time in eight years, and the American League’s Yankees are equipped with patient, potent offenses that can score a lot of runs in bunches quickly.

If the World Series should be a showcase of the best teams and players, then 2024 has a great chance to live up to the hype. The Yankees’ Aaron Judge and the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani are the biggest stars in the game, must-see attractions who are the presumptive MVPs in their respective leagues this season.

If Judge — who hit 58 home runs and batted .322 during the regular season — wasn’t on the Yankees, fans may be talking about teammate Juan Soto as an MVP candidate. His clutch home run in the 10th inning of the fifth game of the Yankees’ American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Guardians sent the Bronx Bombers to the World Series. He’s a young star who will command a massive contract when he becomes a free agent after the season.

There’s also Giancarlo Stanton, who has kicked it into overdrive with his mammoth home runs this postseason, while a strong bullpen can keep opponents at bay late in games.

Ohtani is the headline act for the Dodgers, hitting for power and becoming the first player in major league history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. He’s hardly alone, though. Mookie Betts is a former MVP and World Series champion who is a terror at the plate, while hobbled first baseman Freddie Freeman is another former MVP who won a World Series while with the Atlanta Braves. There’s also an outstanding supporting cast and a bullpen that stepped up to spell the starters in the playoffs.

Yes, this World Series features big-market teams, star players, rabid fan bases and the kind of storylines that fans salivate over come October.

How did the teams get here?

The Yankees were the top seed in the American League. They defeated the Kansas City Royals in the American League Division Series 3 games to 1 before dispatching the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Championship Series 4 games to 1.

The Dodgers were the top seed in the National League. They beat the San Diego Padres in the National League Division Series 3 games to 2, and then toppled the New York Mets in the National League Championship Series 4 games to 2.

Will history be made in the 2024 World Series?

Yes. It may sound hard to believe, but this will be the first World Series appearance for Ohtani and Judge, so one of them will win his first title. Each led his league in home runs this season.

Ohtani never made the playoffs prior to this season, during his six-year tenure with the Los Angeles Angels, while Judge and the Yankees failed to advance past the LCS round in his six prior postseason runs.

This will be the first World Series since 1956 to pit the American League home run leader against the National League home run leader, according to MLB.com reporter Sarah Langs. And guess what? That series featured the Yankees and the-then Brooklyn Dodgers.

This World Series should also mark the first one since 1980 when two players making their World Series debuts won the MVP that season (Mike Schmidt with the Philadelphia Phillies and George Brett with the Kansas City Royals). That, of course, will be true if Ohtani and Judge win the MVP award, as is widely expected.

World Series matchups featuring players who won the MVP that same season are not that uncommon, but it hasn’t happened since 2012, when the Detroit Tigers (Miguel Cabrera) and San Francisco Giants (Buster Posey) met.

And here’s an interesting side note: Yankees outfielder Alex Verdugo came up with the Dodgers as a prized prospect before he was traded to the Boston Red Sox in the winter of 2020 for … Mookie Betts. Verdugo wound up in Boston for four seasons before being traded to the Yankees this past offseason in a rare swap between the two heated rivals. Now, he and Betts will square off.

When was the last time each team won the World Series?

The Dodgers last won the World Series in the COVID-shortened 2020 season when they beat the Tampa Bay Rays. Prior to that, they won the World Series in 1988 when they upset the Oakland A’s.

The Yankees, who have won a major-league best 27 World Series, last won it in 2009 when they beat the Philadelphia Phillies. They hadn’t made the World Series since prior to their current run.

Have the Yankees and Dodgers played in the World Series before?

Most definitely. This will be the 12th time they have met, the most common World Series matchup between two teams in history. They met 11 times between 1941 and 1981, with the Yankees winning eight of those matchups, although the Dodgers did win the last showdown in 1981.
