Weekend Entertainment | Fall foliage and Silent Cinema – Business Journal Daily | The Youngstown Publishing Company

This would be a great weekend to make like a tree and leave.

Fall foliage will be at its absolute peak in the Mahoning Valley – the whole region, really – for the next few days, and you don’t have to drive far to take in the colorful display.

Like a grand finale of fireworks, this is the moment many have been waiting for, according to the Ohio natural resources department

“We are in the home stretch for fall color in Ohio, with mostly peak conditions throughout the state,” said David Parrott, fall color forester (yes, that’s his job title) for the agency. “Vibrant hues are now splashing through tree canopies, so photo opportunities are plentiful in our outdoor spaces this coming weekend.”

The fall color season started out slow because of the lack of rainfall this summer but it has picked up the last few weeks, according to Parrott. It’s now at its crescendo.

Another sign of the season is the annual silent film with live pipe organ accompaniment that takes place at Stambaugh Auditorium every year.

This year, the venue will present “The Lost World” (1925), which was adapted from the novel of the same title by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It will be screened at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at Stambaugh Auditorium. The silent film series usually offers a horror tale, but “The Lost World” is more of a fantastic adventure story about an explorer searching for a place where dinosaurs still roam.

It’s an old fashioned bit of entertainment, with live musical accompaniment on Stambaugh’s impressive pipe organ by Jay Spencer, who is the organist at the Canton Palace Theatre. Tickets are $11, including the service fees, and available at stambaughauditorium.com or by phone at 330 259 9651.

Other noteworthy events this weekend include:

Mark Farner’s American Band, tonight at 8 p.m. at the Robins Theatre in Warren. Farner, of course, was the leader of Grand Funk Railroad, which was among the biggest rock bands of the 1970s. He has been making the rounds, performing on television and radio, and still sounds great. Check him out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU6PXrauCLI

Grand Funk deserves serious consideration for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but that’s another story. Tickets are available at robinstheatre.com and at the box office.

“Gotta Dance,” Easy Street’s dance spectacular, which spotlights famous scenes from some of the greatest musicals. It will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, at Powers Auditorium. For tickets, CLICK HERE.
