Tech Companies Chop Hundreds More Bay Area Jobs as Industry Wobbles

Tech companies have revealed plans to jettison hundreds more Bay Area workers in an unsettling reminder that the shaky industry is still seeking ways to trim employment.

Intel, Maxar Space, Gigamon and AppLovin are among the latest high-tech employers to disclose their intentions to trim their respective workforces in the Bay Area, according to official filings with the state Employment Development Department (EDD).

Here are the details for the most recent staffing reductions reported by tech companies and their effects in the Bay Area:

— Intel, 47 job cuts in San Jose. The semiconductor titan stated the staffing reductions would occur on Nov. 15.

— Gigamon, 69 layoffs in Santa Clara. These cutbacks are due to occur on New Year’s Eve, the computer security firm reported.

— Maxar Space, 61 staffing reductions in the South Bay. These include 52 layoffs in Palo Alto and nine job cuts in Mountain View. The space, satellite and communications firm said the employee eliminations occurred Oct. 18.

— AppLovin, 58 job cuts in Palo Alto. The mobile technologies and software firm said these cuts occurred Oct. 15.

— Kaiser Foundation Hospitals. While not a tech company, the healthcare behemoth eliminated 14 tech jobs, all in the East Bay and primarily in the IT field. These included seven tech jobs in Pleasanton, six in Oakland and one in Walnut Creek.

Outside of the Bay Area, Intel reported plans to eliminate 272 jobs in the Sacramento County city of Folsom. These reductions are slated to occur on Nov. 15.

In 2022, 2023 and 2024 — covering the period when tech companies began to elevate their job-cutting in the Bay Area — the technology industry has slashed well over 47,800 jobs, this news organization’s compilation of hundreds of WARN notices on file with the state EDD shows.

Ominously, numerous tech companies have embarked on multiple rounds of layoffs as the industry’s cutbacks continue. Intel, Maxar Space and AppLovin had all revealed at least one prior round of staffing cutbacks. Intel has disclosed several rounds of staffing reductions.

These are the tech companies that have eliminated the most jobs in the Bay Area over the nearly three-year period that began in 2022, the assessment of the WARN notices shows:

— Meta Platforms, 5,195 layoffs in Menlo Park, San Francisco, Burlingame, Sunnyvale and Fremont.

— Tesla, 3,652 job cuts in Fremont, Palo Alto and San Mateo.

— Cisco Systems, 2,649 staffing reductions in San Jose, San Francisco and Milpitas

— Google, 2,507 layoffs in Mountain View, Moffett Field, San Bruno, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale and San Francisco.

— Broadcom, 1267 job cuts in Palo Alto.

— Salesforce, 1,202 staffing reductions in San Francisco.

— Intel, 1,165 layoffs in Santa Clara and San Jose

— Twitter, 900 job cuts in San Jose and San Francisco

— PayPal, 772 staffing reductions in San Jose

— LinkedIn, 711 layoffs in Sunnyvale, Mountain View and San Francisco

In the most recent staffing reductions, Intel, Gigamon, AppLovin and Maxar all characterized their job cuts as permanent, according to the WARN notices they filed with the state EDD.
