Man accused of stealing car parked outside of Thomaston business

THOMASTON, Maine (WABI) – A man in Knox County faces multiple charges after police say he stole a car from a parking lot in Thomaston on Friday.

The Thomaston Police Department says David Atwood, 55, is charged with three counts of theft.

He is also charged with criminal mischief, burglary, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Police say Atwood stole a car from the parking lot at Lowe’s on New County Road.

Atwood, who is a transient, was identified as a suspect in the burglary of a car rental and for the theft of a golf cart from the property.

Later in the day, they say Atwood returned the stolen car to the Lowe’s parking lot where he was seen leaving on foot.

The vehicle was returned to the owner with significant damage, police say.

The owner also reported that cash was missing from the vehicle.

Atwood was arrested at a local restaurant then and taken to the Knox County Jail.
