Totti: Serie A return ‘not a joke’

Francesco Totti is adamant he could resume his football career as he took the prospect of returning to playing for a Serie A side ‘seriously’ rather than as a joke.

The Roma legend hung up his boots in 2017 but recently claimed that he could make his return and be ready in ‘two months’ if any club called him.

Totti isn’t currently among the top 10 oldest players who made a Serie A appearance but would automatically become the first of such a list should he play a competitive game for a top-tier club.

Totti’s Serie A return will depend on what body and head ‘will tell’

“I’m in time to play the finals [of the EA7 World Legends Padel Tour],” he told reporters, as quoted by TMW.

“As for the Serie A, we’re talking of at least two months of training, that’s the timing. It’s not a joke, I took it seriously.

Asked whether he already has some teams in mind as potential options, Totti replied: “Yes, there are one or two teams.”

“Now let’s see what my body and head will tell me. My head already knows the answer, as for the body we’ll see.

“Who knows what next year has in store.”

Totti played his last match for Roma in 2016-17 after an entire career at the club, which saw him score 307 goals from 786 games. He won a Scudetto with the Giallorossi as well as a World Cup with Italy’s national team in 2006, after which he announced his international retirement.
