Hongkongers can fly more cheaply to Saudi Arabia with Cathay’s Riyadh route: experts

Hongkongers can travel to Saudi Arabia more cheaply following Cathay Pacific Airways’ relaunch of a direct route between the city and the country’s capital Riyadh on Monday, though demand has been slow to pick up due to safety concerns, industry experts have said.

“Due to the increase in flight availability, the cost of flights to Saudi Arabia has decreased,” said Moon Yau Moon-yee, assistant general manager at Sunflower Travel Services.

“In the past, travel packages to Saudi Arabia typically cost around HK$40,000 [US$5,150].

“However, with the adjustment in transport costs, we are now offering a seven-day highlights tour of Saudi Arabia for under HK$20,000.”

Cathay relaunched the direct passenger flights to Riyadh seven years after it was cancelled, with the objective of enhancing connectivity, trade and cultural exchange between its home hub, Hong Kong, and countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative.

The initiative was in line with the government’s recent charm offensive to boost economic ties with the Middle East and boost visitor numbers from the region to Hong Kong.

In his policy address, Lee said he would encourage various sectors to push out incentives for Muslim travellers, including increasing the number of halal restaurants and worship facilities in the city.
