U.S. women’s alpine team shines at first World Cup

The U.S. women’s alpine ski team shone bright at the first World Cup of the season over the weekend in Sölden, Austria. The team saw four of its skiers — Mikaela Shiffrin, Katie Hensen, Nina O’Brien and Paula Moltzan — finish in the top 11 of the giant slalom event. The skiers had warm, spring-like conditions throughout the competition. “I felt solid in my skiing. I am ok with it,” said Shiffrin. “The first run is always tough to see what’s happening, so for the second run, I need to be on top of it.” The next Cup event for the team will be a slalom race in Levi, Finland, on Nov. 16, which can be live-streamed on Peacock

Miners Red hockey defeats South County Monday

The Miners Red hockey team defeated South County Monday on the road 3-2. Park City scored first, early in the second period, before conceding two goals in the middle of the third and then scoring two of their own later that period for the win. Ian Marsland, Mitchell Berry and Jackson Greedy scored goals for the Miners Red, with Vince Billanti having two assists. Park City is now 8-0 and atop the state standings. The Miners White team is also undefeated (6-0), sixth in the state. 

Miners girls volleyball learns of playoff opponent 

The Miners girls volleyball squad found out their second-round opponent Saturday will be West Field, who defeated Snow Canyon three sets to one Saturday in the first round. Park City will take on West Field Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Utah Valley University. The remainder of the tournament will be held at UVU and wrap up Saturday. If the Miners win Friday morning, they’ll play the winner of Cedar and Mountain View Friday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. 

Miners White hockey team to take on NUI Wednesday

The Miners White hockey team will be taking on Northern Utah Independent Wednesday at Park City Ice Arena, at 6:30 p.m. Park City has opened their season 6-0 and is fifth in the state standings. NUI is 0-4-2 and 19th in the state. The Miners White are averaging 5.7 goals per game, for a 22-plus goal differential, and are killing 86% of their penalties. The team will be at the Park City Ice Arena for their inner-program rivalry game with the Miners Red team Nov. 27 at 6:30 p.m.

Wasatch football advances to second round of playoffs

The Wasatch football squad advanced to the second round of the playoffs Friday, defeating West Jordan 29-21 on the road. Wasatch took a 10-7 lead into the half, falling behind 21-13 heading into the fourth quarter before scoring 16 unanswered in the fourth. Hutch Soloman had a pair of goal line scores for Wasatch, and Teague Fritzsche nailed three field goals. Wasatch will next face Brighton Friday at 6 p.m. on the road. Brighton is the 5A three seed, and the winner of the game will advance to the playoff quarterfinals to be held Nov. 8. 

North Summit football learns of playoff opponent 

The North Summit football squad found out their second-round playoff opponent Friday will be North Sevier. North Sevier defeated Gunnison Valley 36-13 at home to advance to the second round. North Summit will host North Sevier Friday at 6 p.m. North Summit defeated North Sevier Oct. 4, 55-27 on the road. North Summit are the two seeds in the 1A bracket and will advance to the semifinals Nov. 9 at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman with a win.
