New York ranks 10th worst state for jobs in 2024, new study reveals | Fingerlakes1.com

New York ranks as the 10th worst state for jobs in 2024, according to a new WalletHub study comparing job market strength and economic vitality across the United States. The state came in 41st overall, with particularly low scores in job opportunities and commute time, both critical factors affecting employment quality and satisfaction.

The study evaluated 34 metrics, including employment growth, median annual income (adjusted for cost of living), and job satisfaction. New York ranked 47th for job opportunities and 50th in average commute time, a challenging reality for job seekers and workers alike. The state scored more favorably in employment growth (24th) and adjusted median annual income (15th), but overall job satisfaction remained low, placing 37th.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo commented on the importance of strong job markets, explaining that the best states for jobs offer stable conditions and competitive pay, benefiting both residents and the local economy. New Hampshire topped the list, excelling in job security, employment opportunities, and low poverty rates among workers.

In expert commentary on future employment trends, analysts highlighted growing demand for healthcare, tech, and skilled labor roles. Dr. C. Darren Brooks of Florida State University noted that job seekers in 2025 will need adaptable skills that can transfer across multiple fields as technological advances reshape the workforce.
