STORY: U.S. retail sales increased more than expected in September, another sign that economic growth remained strong in the third quarter. A report from the Commerce Department out Thursday showed sharp increases in receipts at retailers ranging from clothing outlets to book stores, grocers to gardening centers. This year marks the 15th anniversary of Small Business Saturday, which was started in 2010 by American Express as an effort to redirect shoppers’ dollars to local communities during the Great Recession. In 2011, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution declaring Small Business Saturday a nationally recognized day.
