Learnin’ The Ropes keeps the community jumping for health and fitness
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) – Bowling Green couple Kaylee and Nick Woodard are on a mission to get the community jumping through their nonprofit organization, Learnin’ The Ropes.
Launched with a passion for the sport of jump rope, the program has quickly grown into a nationwide phenomenon, offering classes, workshops and performances across the country.
“We started ‘Learnin’ The Ropes’ with the intent to get the community jumping,” co-founder Kaylee Woodard said. “We had grown up in the sport of jump rope for years, and we really did not want to start just one team in the community — we wanted to get the entire community jumping.”
The organization has reached children of all ages, including after-school programs in Bowling Green. Currently, the program operates in three area elementary schools, where students are introduced to various jump rope techniques and skills each week.
“The kids are learning all components of jump rope,” Woodard said. “We always do single rope, but then we’ll also sprinkle in other elements like partner jumping, long rope, even some double dutch to just allow them to experience all that jump rope has to offer.”
Learnin’ The Ropes relies on a dedicated teaching team, including college students from Western Kentucky University and full-time instructors. Together, they lead classes and introduce the sport to young learners, encouraging a lifelong commitment to fitness.
Alongside teaching, the organization also performs at schools and halftime shows nationwide. These performances blend motivational speaking with athletic demonstrations, and have been featured at NBA games, college events and even multiple Olympic games.
“We love to perform,” Woodard said. “Looking to do more of that in the future as well.”
One upcoming event is the second annual Bowling Green Jump Day, set for Saturday, Nov. 23 at Phil Moore Park. The three-hour event will feature jump rope activities, a performance and contests where participants can try for the highest jump count. Attendees can even make their own ropes to take home.
“It is an exciting day,” Woodard said.
