November 7 Vallejo/Vacaville Arts and Entertainment Source: Solano College Theatre opens ‘The Visit’
Although Solano College’s new play, the 1956 tragicomic “The Visit,” was written nearly 70 years ago, director JanLee Marshall says the story is as important today as it have ever been.
“I love a tragicomedy, and this show is as relevant today as it was when it was written in 1956,” said Marshall in a press release. “While many are not familiar with this show, set in 1958 in a European Village, Gullen could be any small town, anywhere, in any year.”
Marshall has been an adjunct professor with Solano College Theatre since 2018, regularly directing shows since.
“The Visit” tells the story of Claire Zachanassian, a multimillionaire who returns to her hometown with a vengeance, offering money and wealth in exchange for the killing of a man who wronged her years before.
“In a world that often feels like it is ruled by money, this play poses the question, ‘Can justice be bought?’ and makes us consider our own choices regarding needs versus wants and our love of things,” said Marshall.
The play features a Solano Community College triple threat in Jailynn Bermudez, who in addition to playing Claire Zachanassian, is a player on the SCC volleyball and swimming teams.
No matter what type of theater you enjoy, Marshall says “The Visit” has it.
“It includes romance, power, poverty, greed, commercialism, betrayal, capitalism, honesty, and murder,” says Marshall. “What more could you ask for?”
