Rattlers travel to Texas for game at Prairie View A&M – Florida A&M
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas –– Florida A&M (5-3, 3-1 SWAC) heads to Texas to continue its winning streak as it faces Prairie View A&M (4-5, 2-3 SWAC) on Saturday. The Rattlers are coming off an impressive 52-28 homecoming victory over Texas Southern, where they showed dominance on both sides of the ball.
FAMU’s offense has found its stride, with quarterback Daniel Richardson coming off a historic five-touchdown performance – the first Rattler to accomplish that feat since Rasean McKay against Arkansas-Pine Bluff in 2021. The Rattlers’ ground game has also emerged as a force in recent weeks, helping balance the offense.
“Anytime we can run the football effectively, that only makes our passing game a heck of a lot better,” said FAMU head coach James Colzie III.
The Rattlers’ defense continues to be stifling, holding Texas Southern to under 200 yards of total offense last week. They’ll face a Prairie View offense that has struggled this season, averaging just 319.8 yards per game while allowing 23 sacks.
However, Coach Colzie isn’t taking Prairie View lightly, especially given their history – the teams met in last year’s SWAC Championship game.
“They’ve got a very, very good quarterback, they’ve got a very, very good receiving core, they play hard on the defensive side of the football,” Colzie noted. “If we don’t play well, we could go up there and come back as an upset football team because we didn’t take care of our business.”
The keys to victory for FAMU include maintaining its strong running game and protecting the football on the road. The Panthers’ defense likes to bring pressure, which could create opportunities in the passing game.
“When you go on the road, there’s two things you got to be able to do – you got to be able to run the football and you can’t turn the ball over,” said Colzie. “If we can do those two things, I like our chances.”
The matchup features two contrasting teams statistically – FAMU averages 363.1 yards per game while allowing 344.9. At the same time, Prairie View’s offense has struggled to find consistency, averaging 319.8 yards while giving up 393.8 per game. The Rattlers will look to exploit these advantages as they continue their push toward the SWAC championship.
Kickoff is set for Saturday, November 9, at 3 p.m. Eastern on ESPN+ at Prairie View’s Panther Stadium.
