Quintero Takes Fifth at US Open, Earns Spot at World Team Trials – Purdue Boilermakers

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Four Purdue freshmen competed alongside two incoming Boilers in the U20 division at the 2024 US Open Championships this weekend, with the highlight performance coming from the soon-to-be enrolled Isaiah Quintero who finished in fifth to punch his ticket to the U20 World Team Trials later this summer.

Quintero, competing in the 57 kg weight class, went 6-2 on the weekend to guarantee himself a spot at the World Team Trials in Geneva, Ohio next month. The No. 49 overall recruit in the incoming class adds this US Open podium finish to an already stellar resume that includes a California state title and Fargo All-American honors.

He will be joined in Geneva by future teammates Orlando Cruz and James Rowley who had already earned their spots. The event will run in its entirety on June 1.

Joey Blaze (74 kg) joined Quintero on day two of the tournament, but fell one round shy of the podium matches. The true freshman NCAA qualifier finished with a 5-2 record in Vegas with three tech falls to his name.

Isaac Ruble (70 kg) racked up two techs and a pin on the weekend with a 4-2 record. Cole Solomey (65 kg) went 2-2, bouncing back from an opening round defeat to string two in a row before dropping his final match.
