Mike Williamson: Carlisle United head coach sees improvement in side’s performances

Carlisle United head coach Mike Williamson says he is seeing steady improvement in his side’s performances following their 1-1 draw at Bromley on Saturday.

The 41-year-old took over at Brunton Park in September after leaving MK Dons and won his game in charge of the club- a 2-0 victory at Swindon Town.

Following that victory, however, Carlisle went nine games without a win in all competitions before beating Salford 1-0 earlier in November.

“As a complete performance, that’s up there with the best that we’ve had so far,” Williamson told BBC Radio Cumbria.

“Obviously, it’s about the lads having an understanding of why we’re moving the ball and when to speed it up.”

Williamson was appointed by Carlisle owner Tom Piatak after the American posted a statement on the club website, external telling fans he had chosen the former Newcastle United defender as they shared the same possession-based footballing philosophy.

After taking a point from Hayes Lane thanks to a stoppage time equaliser from Dan Adu-Adjei, Williamson is confident his side can climb up the League Two table from their current position in 23rd.

United had 70 per cent of the ball in Saturday’s draw at Bromley, racking up 23 shots in the process and Williamson is confident his style of play suits his new squad.

“The amount of times we entered the final third and the amount of chances we created was fantastic,” Williamson added.

“For us, it was about building up that emotion we felt as though we started with the Wigan game – we put a real resilient performance there and then every week we’ve built off that.

“Another day, we score another couple of goals and take the three points but, for me, it was just about building on the actual performance and I thought you could see steady steps of improvement”.
