Omaha nonprofit shares indigenous stories, identity through fashion

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – After a year’s worth of designing and sewing, indigenous women of Omaha are sharing their creations.

Healing Ribbons is a Nebraska nonprofit to promote the cultural identity of indigenous women through clothing and fashion.

At the event, there is much in the way of colorful and intricate regalia.

They symbolize not only their heritage, but their own personal stories of hurt and healing.

This is for a local fashion show called “The Art of Healing: Stories, Stiches, and the Sacred”.

“To come together as women, as indigenous women, I had a brother who took his life earlier this year,” participant Lisa Spellman said. “Just coming and not having to talk, but we did have talking circles, that was very helpful. But just being with the women was very comforting.”

The nonprofit hosted the show today on Creighton’s campus.

About 50 people proudly walked in their handmade regalia.
