Morning sports: Copenhagen falls in state soccer final

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – The Copenhagen Golden Knights girls soccer team came up short Sunday in their search of a state title.

The Golden Knights fell to Northville in the Class D championship game, 1-0.

Northville’s Lexi Ginter scored the game’s lone goal.

Four north country football teams are still in the hunt for state titles.

The Indian River Wolves made it back-to-back Section 3 class B championships on Friday night at the JMA Wireless Dome, beating New Hartford 34-26 in overtime to advance to the states.

Ariel Raymond led the Wolves’ offensive attack with 201 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Indian River advances to the states, where they will square off against Maine Endwell of Section 4 in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 3 pm at Cicero North Syracuse High School.

” I wasn’t on varsity last year but to be a part of a ‘two-peat’ is amazing. I love the team. It’s just amazing,” Raymond said.

“We practice all off season just to get here. It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had,” said Trevor Shawcross, who contributed 233 yards rushing and one touchdown.

The other area team still alive in class B is the O.F.A. Blue Devils

Coach Matt Tessmer’s team opened state play on Friday night with a 14-10 win over Beekmantown at Plattsburgh High school to advance to the quarterfinals, where they will meet Glens Falls on Friday night at 6 o’clock at Potsdam High School.

In class C, the General Brown Lions captured their second Section 3 class C championship in 3 years on Friday night, beating Bishop Ludden/S.A.S. 19-6 at the JMA Wireless Dome.

Hayden Moody would score twice to lead the Lions attack in the win.

General Brown now advances to meet Chenango Forks in state class C action on Saturday at high noon at Cicero North Syracuse High School.

“It’s always our goal after the division title to get back to the Dome and these kids worked extremely hard. They put in a lot of hours starting in July. They’re a dedicated bunch and they’re a selfless bunch. They play for each other, and I think that’s the key to our success,” said Doug Black, General Brown’s coach.

Also in class C, the Gouverneur Wildcats advanced in state play on Friday night, beating Saranac Central 27-16 at Potsdam High School.

The Wildcats will now meet Schuylerville of Section 2 on Friday afternoon at 4 pm at Shenendehowa High School.
