AAA stresses preparations ahead of holiday travels

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Travel demands continue to increase post-pandemic. AAA says that nearly 80 million Americans are expected to be traveling this Thanksgiving holiday as it is the most popular holiday for travel.

“It’s a long weekend because of when it falls. A lot of places aren’t open on Friday and most of them are closed on Saturday and Sunday as well, so it’s just a long holiday and gives a long holiday weekend,” Scott Martin with AAA Topeka said.

Gas prices have dropped 34 cents a gallon since last year. AAA expects that about 90% of Kansans are expected will travel by road.

Martin says Kansans should make preparations well ahead of their trip to get to their destination safely and on time.

“Make sure that your car is in proper working order, your tires are properly inflated and all of that, you’ve got plenty of fluids in your car,” Martin said. “Depending on where you’re going you never know what the weather’s going to bring. Make sure you’ve got some winter protective, survival stuff in your car; kitty litter, shovel, warm clothes that sort of stuff.”

Staying in contact with family and friends throughout your travels can also be an important safety measure.

AAA recommends traveling on Thanksgiving day, if possible, to avoid busy roads.

“Make sure you leave in plenty of time to get to where you need to be, don’t make yourself rush. Also, be patient out on the road. Everybody’s trying to get to some place so be patient,” Martin said.

Drivers should also remain vigilant on the road being mindful of road workers and pulling over if tired or in need of a break.

Those traveling by plane should also be aware of the holiday traffic and arrive two to three hours early at the airport.

“Be safe, give yourself plenty of time, and have a great holiday.”
