Concert Countdown: 13 Greenville concerts to see in December. It’s not just holiday music.

GREENVILLE — It’s December. And December is for holiday music, right?

Well, yes, but not so fast. 

Sure, we’ve got The Nutcracker, John Legend’s Grammy-winning Christmas album and, um, a Santa Rave coming to Greenville. But we’ve also got a tribute show to Tool and Broadway star Christy Altomare.

Check it all out down below:

Canadian Brass

What: Hear your favorite holiday classics like “Jingle Bell Rock” and “Charlie Brown Christmas” performed by this 54-year-old Toronto brass quintet, considered “one of the most popular brass ensembles in the world.” Oh, and expect lots of jokes and, of course, a “Die Hard” song. 

When: Dec. 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Where: Peace Center, 300 S Main St.

How much: $35-$65

The Mountain Goats

What: Dubbed a “pillar of the indie-rock world,” this Durham-based band has produced more than 20 albums since its lo-fi records of the early 1990s, including hits like “No Children,” “This Year” and “Jenny.” They’re led by frontman John Darnielle, known for his deft songwriting and once described as “America’s best non-hip hop lyricist.” 

When: Dec. 2 from 8 to 11 p.m.

Where: Radio Room, 28 Liberty Ln.

How much: $50.50 in advance, $55.50 day of show

Taylor Corum

What: Check out this country musician who often performs across the Upstate. Make sure to follow him on Facebook, where he posts song lyrics (or poems?) signed off from different Upstate locations.

Reedy River String Band

What: Never seen the Reedy River String Band? Well, now’s the time to learn about this old-school acoustic bluegrass group from Greenville. You’ll hear everything from guitar to bass to fiddle to banjo and, yes, harmonica. 

When: Dec. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Tool Tribute

What: Do you love the music of the alt-rock band Tool? This is the tribute concert for you. It will pay homage to the Grammy-winning group with popular albums such as “10,000 Days” and “Fear Inoculum.” The Raleigh-based tribute band, Third Eye, will perform songs from across Tool’s 34 year career “with the live energy of early TOOL club shows.”

When: Dec. 8 at 9 p.m.

Goodbye June

What: Southern rock fans unite at Radio Room for Goodbye June, a jamming Nashville band best known for songs “Oh No” and “Step Aside.” It recently released a new album, “Deep in the Trouble.” You might have also heard them on the Madden 17 soundtrack and ESPN’s College Gameday.

When: Dec. 12 from 8 to 11 p.m.

Kylie Odetta

What: Hear Greenville-based indie pop artist Kylie Odetta at this “cozy Christmas concert” at the West Greenville coffee shop Village Grind. Odetta, whose song “Under the Sun” has nearly 2.5 million Spotify streams, will perform with fellow Greenville musicians Steven Galloway and Joey Noyes.

When: Dec. 13 at 7 p.m.

Where: The Village Grind, 1258 Pendleton St.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra

What: Have you ever looked up photos of Trans-Siberian Orchestra? Go do that now. Their shows are crazy spectacles with lights flashing everywhere, rising stages and possibly, even, fire. Described as an “arena-rock juggernaut,” the legendary band will perform their widely popular fourth studio album, the rock opera “The Lost Christmas Eve” twenty years after the double platinum record was released.

When: Dec. 13 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

John Legend

What: Is there anyone better to sing Christmas classics that the angelic voice of John Legend? The R&B and pop sensation will revive iconic holiday tunes like “Silver Bells” and “This Christmas” when he performs his Grammy-winning 2018 album “A Legendary Christmas” at the Peace Center. 

When: Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Christy Altomare

What: You may know Christy Altomare from her starring part in the Broadway musical “Anastasia.” Now, she’ll bring her worldwide popular Broadway songs to Greenville, reprising her roles in “Mamma Mia!,” “Spring Awakening” and, of course, “Anastasia.”

When: Dec. 17 at 8 p.m.

Where: Greenville Theatre, 444 College St.

Santa Rave

What: A…Santa Rave? Yep, believe it or not. Go crazy for “Jingle Bell Rock” on the Radio Room dance floor.

The Nutcracker

What: What’s a holiday season without The Nutcracker? Greenville’s International Ballet will perform the historic show with music from the Greenville Symphony and singing from the Greenville Youth Chorale. You may even see some snowfall, too.

Brian Ashley Jones and Melanie Jean

What: Country and blues, weaved together. See this guitar and bass duo join together at Fireforge —  a homecoming for Jones, an Upstate native who now lives in Nashville.
