Bloomberg: Sony Interactive Entertainment working on portable PS5
Sony Interactive Entertainment is currently in the early stages of developing a portable console that plays PlayStation 5 games, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with its development.
The console is aimed at expanding PlayStation‘s reach and contending with Nintendo for the portable gaming market, and would also act as a counter to any potential mobile hardware from Microsoft Gaming, which recently confirmed it is working on prototypes.
According to the people, the portable device is likely years away from launch and Sony Interactive Entertainment could still decide against releasing it.
PlayStation Portal, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s remote player for PlayStation 5 that ‘exceeded expectations,’ was initially intended to function as a standalone device without the need for a PlayStation 5, the people said.
A Sony Group Corporation spokeswoman declined to comment when contacted by Bloomberg.
