Will snow or rain disrupt Thanksgiving travel? Here’s the forecast for the Peoria area

Thanksgiving week is traditionally one of the busiest travel seasons of the year in the United States, and this year is no exception.

The Transportation Security Administration is preparing for the busiest Thanksgiving travel period on record and expects to screen 18.3 million airline passengers between Nov. 26 and Dec. 2. The three busiest days of the week should be Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday. AAA projected another 79.9 million Americans will take to the roads and commute 50 miles or more during the Thanksgiving travel period.

The possibility of winter weather is always a potential factor in late November travel plans. Commuters driving to or from the Peoria area this Thanksgiving might want to keep abreast of weather developments and leave early to beat the wet conditions they may encounter on Wednesday, or wait out the weather and travel on Thanksgiving morning.

A low-pressure system will move up the Ohio River and Tennessee River valleys this week, according to National Weather Service meteorologist John Bumgardner. While the Peoria area should be north of the system, it could bring enough cold air and moisture to the region to create rain, snow or a mix of the two.

“A stronger low that tracks closer to us will have lot of cold air behind it and lots of moisture with it,” Bumgardner said. “That would give us accumulating snow. A weaker low might only give us light snow accumulation, or it might all be rain. If it tracks to the south, we might not get any precipitation at all.”

Bumgardner estimated that a strong system tracking close to central Illinois would produce a maximum of 2-4 inches of snow and gave that scenario a 10% to 15% likelihood. Central Illinois is most likely to see precipitation Wednesday.

Because the low-pressure system is tracking on an east-to-west path, the direction a Thanksgiving traveler is driving may dictate when to set out, Bumgardner added.

“If you leave Des Moines and you drive to Peoria, it might be easier to travel Thursday morning,” he said. “If you’re coming from Indianapolis, it might be better to travel Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.”
