Cyclones avoid another in-state upset
AMES — Audi Crooks scored the winning shot as time expired and a season-high 33 points as No. 8 Iowa State survived with an 80-78 win over Drake on Sunday afternoon.
Addy Brown added 13 points and eight rebounds, Emily Ryan scored 11 points with 12 assists and Kenzie Hare had 10 points as the Cyclones (5-1) avoided a second consecutive loss.
The Cyclones fell at Northern Iowa on Wednesday, 87-75, for their first loss of the season.
The Bulldogs (2-3) were led by guard Katie Dinnebier, who scored 39 points on 13-of-16 shooting and went 8 of 10 from 3-point range. Dinnebier went 5 of 6 from the charity stripe.
Anna Miller added 18 points in Drake’s attempt to dethrone Iowa State, and Abbie Aalsma scored 11 off the bench.
“We gave every last ounce that we possibly had and just came up a little short,” said Drake head coach Allison Pohlman. “We just gave them a little bit too much time … great players make great plays and that’s what happened down the stretch.
“We really tried to be strategic with our timing and urgency, they were fantastic of getting position and coming up with scores. It feels like it comes down to one play but if we could’ve shored a couple things up elsewhere, we could’ve executed a little better when we needed it.”
