‘Times are hard’: Local business gives away turkeys to people in need

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) – The High Society Poker Club gave away 200 turkeys to Killeen residents during its fourth annual turkey giveaway.

The poker club purchased 200 turkeys from HEB and handed them to anyone who drove through their parking lot.

“The community has been taking care of us throughout the year,” High Society Poker Club co-owner Jeremy Bowman said. “We’re just giving back.”

This is the first year the High Society Poker Club has held the event without a partner to assist in securing turkeys.

The line started long, wrapping around the building. People waiting to receive a turkey expressed gratitude to the poker club.

“Times are hard, obviously,” Killeen resident Jacob Ramirez said. “And there’s a lot of bills we gotta pay. And why not save a couple of bucks wherever you can? There’s an opportunity for us to have something to eat and say thanks to them.”

High Society Poker Club co-owner, Kevin Greenwood, said giving back to their community was important to their business.

“The communities always need to be given back to,” Greenwood said. “And in our industry and our line of business, we definitely need to make sure that we’re accommodating that.”

They plan to hold the turkey giveaway again next year.

“We’d rather give back than us pocket money,” Bowman said. “We’d rather just give back to the community and people that need it. There’s a long line outside. People need it so we have no problem giving back.”
