Born in rainy Manchester in 1938, one year after the brand’s inception, and globally recognized today as a timeless symbol of British style, the G9 Harrington Jacket has been adopted and reappropriated by different subcultures, celebrities and many other people across the last eight and a half decades.
To celebrate its fame and influence, Baracuta went back to its roots — Manchester — to picture what the G9 stands and stood for to people from all ages and backgrounds. This resulted in a narration involving 13 British faces from all walks of life. Each recalls their emotional connections with Baracuta’s Harrington Jacket, an emblem of true Britishness. These stories were gathered in a special volume dedicated to this iconic jacket along with never-before-seen archival imagery and documents.
In the 85 years since Baracuta’s first G9 Harrington Jacket was crafted, a whole string of subcultural movements have taken the jacket and made it their own. In the U.K., where the brand originates, there have been the Mods and the punks, the skinheads and the ska fans. On the other side of the Atlantic, the Harrington has been loved by Hollywood’s biggest names and Ivy Leaguers alike, who helped turn the jacket into a preppy essential.
The jacket was originally designed for Manchester’s golfers by Baracuta‘s founders, John and Isaac Miller. The inspiration behind designing the jacket was the golfer’s swing. The pockets were slanted with a single-button closure so that they could comfortably hold two golf balls. The name of the jacket itself pays a tribute to the sport, with G standing for “golf” and 9 representing the number of holes.
The G9 Harrington Jacket is a timeless piece of clothing that has been worn by people from all walks of life for more than 85 years. It is a versatile jacket that can be dressed up or down, and it is a perfect choice for any occasion. Whether you are a golfer, a musician, or just someone who appreciates classic style, the G9 Harrington Jacket is sure to become a wardrobe staple.
